Sports Notes

Volleyball is a great fun sport

Volleyball is a great fun sport to play with friends whether you are in the gym or at the beach. Volleyball is a sport that requires a bit of athleticism and focus to play. To win a game of volley ball you need to apply a good strategy and know the rules. You need to know the strengths and weaknesses of you team. Now if you are unfamiliar with volleyball, lets cover the basics. A standard team consists of six players. A player starts off by serving the ball similar to tennis but with their hand, not a racquet. The player stands outside the boundary line and must serve the ball directly over the net towards the opposing team, then immediately get in bounds. The opposing teams goal is to not the let the ball get grounded on their side of the net. They can touch the ball three times but no one player can touch the ball twice consecutively, otherwise it is a fault. The first or second touches are usually used to set the ball in position to return the ball across the net. Once returned across the net the serving team has the same opportunity. This is called a rally. A rally goes back and forth until a teams causes a fault. This is the primary way the game is played until a team reaches fifteen points. It is a common belief that volleyball is a ladies game. This is generally true in high school and college. Some Division I college programs exist that offer scholarships for male volleyball teams. There are medals given in the Olympic for men and women's volleyball. There is also a well watched variation, played on the sand. Beach volleyball rules are slightly different since the matches are played by pairs known as couples, not six player teams. Playing in the sand adds a level of difficulty since it is harder to keep stable footing when moving directionally on the sand. Beach volleyball was added to the Olympic roster of sports in 1996, so it is still a considerably new sport having made only five appearances at the games. Outside of a professional competition volleyball is a great sport to play. If you ever make it to the beach you are guaranteed to see a group of people rallying a ball over a net. If you get a chance, join in and see why they are having so much fun.
