Tom Weiskopf The Towering Inferno
Tom Weiskopf The Towering Inferno: Tom Weiskopf is a professional golfer who became a popular name in the 70s. Born in 1942 in Massillon, Ohio, he started out his career in golf as part of the golfing team of the Ohio State University. In 1964, he joined the PGA Tour and got his first win two years after.
The Towering Inferno: Tom Weiskopf didn't get the nickname Towering Inferno for nothing. Well, he's one of the tallest golf players in his time, which is probably the reason why the nickname had the tower in it. The inferno part was probably derived from his notorious temper, being known as one of the golfers before who had the worst temper. In one of his interviews, he said that he would run out of patience and beat himself up sometimes.
PGA Tour: Tom Weiskopf had the swing that was admired by everybody in his era. This is because he usually hits the ball high with great power, along with great ball control. After his first win in 1968, two years after joining the PGA Tour, fifteen wins followed until 1982. His most successful year was probably in 1973, the year when he won seven golf titles around the world.
Throughout Weiskopf's career, he earned $1,981,341.80. He joined 381 tournaments, including PGA Tour events, and winning 14 times including the Canadian Open and The Open Championship in 1973. It was also his best year which earned him the sum of $271,205.69.
In 1993, he joined the Senior PGA Tour. He won many tournaments including a major tournament in 1995 - the U.S. Senior Open against Jack Nicklaus with a 4-stroke win. Nowadays, he is into the golf course design industry, with about 40 golf courses in his portfolio. Tom Weiskopf is now a known golf course architect with his designs in golf courses including the Troon Golf and Country Club in Scottsdale and Loch Lomond in Scotland. With the design he makes, he gets a lot of praises from golf professionals.
He also contributes to the coverage of The Open Championship in television networks including ESPN and ABC Sports.
Notable Achievements: Outside of the PGA Tour, he was able to get the Argentine Open in 1979, the Jerry Ford Invitational event in 1982, Benson & Hedges International Open (European Tour) in 1981 and the Chrysler Cup in 1993. In his Senior PGA Tour appearances, he got the title of the Franklin Quest Championship in 1994, U.S. Senior Open in 1995, and the Pittsburg Senior Classic and SBC Dominion Seniors in 1996.
