Tom Kite A Hall of Famer

Tom Kite A Hall of Famer: Tom Kite is one of the most respected personalities in golf. By the age of six, he began playing golf alongside his father, winning his first tournament five years later. After his family moved to Austin, he got his mentoring from the Hall of Fame golf instructor, Harvey Penick. Since baseball was very popular in the 60s, lots of kids were dreaming of becoming a world-famous slugger someday. As for Tom Kite, he dreamed of becoming a PGA Tour Pro. Collegiate Career and PGA. After his success in his university years, winning consecutive NCAA Championships in 1971 and 1972, he became a full-time PGA Tour Pro the next year. With patience and determination, he was able to grab 19 PGA Tour wins three years later. He didn't have the driving skills of Greg Norman or the putting strokes of Ben Crenshaw. What he had in his sleeves was his wedge game. In the history of PGA Tour, he is the first to carry a third wedge for a more accurate distance control. Again, he became a legend in the PGA Tour as the only man to get consecutive wins from 1981-1987. The last year of his streak earned him the PGA Player of the Year and The Players Championship. What was his secret? Tom Kite was a complete workaholic. He's known to spend hours practicing, trying to perfect his craft. His efforts paid off again and again. In June 21, 1992, he got his U.S. Open title against Jeff Sluman. PGA Tour Accomplishments. Throughout his career, he played in 735 tournaments, making 610 cuts. He was able to get 20 wins, including the 1993 Nissan Los Angeles Open and Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. He averaged a score of 70.40 and this led to total earnings of $11,227,107.43. He also participated in European Tours including the 1980 European Open and 1996 Oki Pro-Am where he got the first place. In 2000, Tom got his win in the PGA Seniors, The Countrywide Tradition, against Larry Nelson and Tom Watson with a birdie on the 6th hole. In 2004, Tom Kite was indicted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. This was because of his outstanding performance in PGA Tours, being one of the most popular golf personalities with a lot of wins to show for it. Nowadays, he's participating in the U.S. Senior Open. With the experience in designing golf courses in the U.S., he's starting to build a new reputation in the line of golf course design.
