Tom Glavine - A Tale of Two Careers

Thomas Tom Michael Glavine, born on March 25, 1966 in Concord, Massachusetts, started out his baseball career as a pitcher in high school and he ended up with four league all-star and all-conference awards. After graduating from Billerica Memorial High School in 1984, he skipped college and entered the draft, and he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves (2nd Round) of the MLB draft. As an interesting note, he was also drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the NHL draft, being a top hockey player in high school as well. He chose to play baseball. Tom Glavine made his debut in the Major League on August 17, 1987 against the Houston Astros. Five days later, he got his first win over the Pittsburgh Pirates with a score of 10-3. Teams Played For Tom Glavine only played for two teams throughout his career. Atlanta Braves was his first team, where he achieved a lot of success. After two decades, he moved to the New York Mets and played for four years. Then he rejoined the Atlanta Braves, retiring after three years. Atlanta Braves (1987 to 2002, 2008 to Present) His first years with the Atlanta Braves achieved mixed results. For the years 1987 to 1990, he compiled a 33 win 43 loss record. The team's worst performance with him was in 1988, with the team suffering a 17-loss season. Four years after his Major League debut, tides started to change as he won 20 games in a row for three consecutive seasons. In 1991, he got his first NL Cy Young Award, and the second was in 1998. In 1995, the Atlanta Braves defeated the Cleveland Indians in the World Series, with Tom Glavine as the World Series MVP. It was also in 1991 when he was awarded with the Babe Ruth Award. In 1992, 1996, and 1999, the team also went to the World Series with Tom Glavine as one of the Major League All-Stars. After a four-year contract with the New York Mets (the deal was estimated at around $42.5 million), he got back to his home team and retired on August 6, 2010. New York Mets (2003 to 2007) Without a guarantee of having his contract renewed in 2003, he left the Atlanta Braves and played for the New York Mets. The first season was poor, with him compiling a 9 win 14 loss record. In 2004, he started to get his old form back, only to have a decent record in the following seasons. His last year with the New York Mets gave him his 300th win with the win over the Chicago Cubs. Notable Accomplishments He got the National League Cy Young Award in the years 1991 and 1998. He also won the World Series MVP in 1995. In the years 1991, 1995, 1996, and 1998, he was awarded as the Silver Slugger of the MLB.
