Johnson City Cardinals – The St. Louis Cardinals Farm Team
The Johnson City Cardinals are a Minor League Baseball team that hails from Johnson City in Tennessee and plays in the Western Division of the Appalachian League and are the farm team of the St. Louis Cardinals, from which the team has derived its nickname.
The team is affiliated to the St. Louis Cardinals in the Rookie level. The Cardinals were founded in 1937 and have gone through several changes of name in its long history. These names include the Johnson City Soldiers, Johnson City Cardinals, Johnson City Phillies, Harlan Smokies, Harlan Yankees, and Johnson City Yankees before finally settling on the Cardinals name again.
The Johnson City Cardinals play their home games at the Howard Johnson Field, which is a small stadium. The team has won the League title on 6 occasions in 1940, 1958, 1964, 1975, 1976 and 2010. The team has also won the Division Championship on 4 occasions in 1986, 1987, 1994 and 2010.
The team is currently owned by the St. Louis cardinals and operated by the Johnson City Sports Foundation. After the Division winning season of 2010, the Johnson City Cardinals are now in a phase of transition and are looking forward to the new season.
