Billy Burke ' One of the first Greats of Golf

Billy Burke was one of the earliest professional golfers of the United States of America to gain some sort of prominence in the professional world having played the bulk of his career in the 1920s and 1930s.

His greatest ever season perhaps came in 1931 when Billy Burke won the US Open, his only victory at a Major event and also made his way to the semi finals of the PGA Championship, won four events on the PGA Tour and was also named in the Ryder Cup team of the US to face the team from Europe. He was not beaten in the two matches that he competed in the Ryder Cup that term which led Billy Burke to be called into the team again in 1933.

Burke was one of the most competitive players in the history of golf having won the US Open in one of the longest play offs in the history of the event. Billy Burke had a never say die attitude and this attitude led him to win 17 professional titles in his career, which was a big deal back in those days. However, Billy Burke is yet to be named in the Hall of fame of Golf.
