Payne Stewart

Payne Stewart is one of the most colorful golfers to have ever been in the golfing scene. He was a favorite among the photographers because of his gorgeously eccentric style of dressing and colorful clothes. Payne Stewart was rumored to have the largest wardrobe among all professional golfers of his era. His trademark ivy caps and patterned pants made him very popular with fans and was a pleasure to watch on the golf course.

However he wasn't all show, Payne Stewart has won a total of 11 PGA Tour events including the 1991 and 1999 US Open and the 1989 PGA Championship. He was a very highly ranked player and was in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings for over 250 weeks when he died unnaturally in a plane crash. Payne Stewart captained 5 Ryder Cups and was very passionate about the event. So much so that he even commented about his European opponents saying, 'On paper, they should be caddying for us'.

He led the United States team to a 4-1 victory during the 5 times that he played. On the fateful day of the 25th of October, the colorful Payne Stewart died in an air accident. The Learjet he was flying in lost cabin pressure and everyone inside died of hypoxia before the plane plummeted towards the earth. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest American golfer to have ever set foot on a golf course.
