Michelle Akers

Michelle Akers: History and achievements: Michelle Akers is a former American pro footballer. She was part of the 1991 and 1999 Women's World Cup winning teams. She plays as a midfielder or a striker, depending on where the team needs her.

Michelle Akers was born in Santa Clara, California on 1st February, 1966. Her father and mother were Robert and Anne Akers respectively. She attended Shorecrest High School where she played football and was named part of an All-American team three times during her tenure at the school.

After passing out of high school, she went to the University of Central Florida on a football scholarship. She became the university's Athlete of the Year for 1988-'89. During her college term, she was named part of the All-American team yet again. She also holds the college record for having scored the maximum number of goals for any UCF student, and led her college team to victory in the Hermann Trophy in 1988.

Michelle Akers made her international debut in 1985 when she accompanied the National Women's team, and scored her first international goal against Denmark. Michelle Akers made a total of 158 appearances for her country, scoring 105 goals in the process. She was indicted into the Hall of Fame and was named FIFA's Woman Player of the Year in 2002.
