Mia Hamm: Childhood and records
Mariel Margaret Hamm, better known
as Mia Hamm, is an ex-American
football player. She played for quite a few years
as the center forward for the United States' women's soccer team and has a number of records to her name.
Mia Hamm was born in Selma, Alabama on 17th March, 1972. She born with a deformity in her foot called a club foot. In
this deformity, the foot appears to have been twisted at the ankle. She had to ear special shoes as a child to rid
herself of this deformity. Although she had a problem with her foot, that never stopped her from taking part in
sports. She was very actively taking part in a number of organized sports events from a very young age. She joined
the United States women's national team at the tender age of 15, thus becoming the youngest player ever to have
played for them.
Among her many records, the one that stands out more starkly than the rest is the fact that she has scored the
maximum number of goals, internationally, for any player, male or female, in the history of United States football.
Her total goal count stood at 158 when she retired in 2004. Mia Hamm also holds the record for the second highest
number of international appearances, just after Kristen Lilly.
