Charles Jenkins

Charles Jenkins is one of the biggest names in the history of American track and field events, having been the winner of two Gold Medals at the 1956 summer Olympic Games held in Melbourne, Australia.

Jenkins was part of the track team of Villanova between the years 1955 and 1957. He won the National AAU Championship in 1955 when he was coached by the great Jumbo Elliott in the 402m race. But people remember Charles Jenkins mostly for his historic victory at the 400m race in the Melbourne Olympic Games.

After barely scraping through the two heats prior to the final, being placed third in both of them, Jenkins just breezed past the competition in the finals to win the 400m Gold.

He won his second and last Olympic Gold Medal just a few days afterwards when the United States relay team won the 4 x 400m relay race, earning Charles Jenkins a place in the history books.

He was also a very good indoor athlete as well winning three titles in 1955, 1957 and 1958. He was the successor of Elliott after his death as the coach of the Villanova team.

His son was also a part of the 1992 Olympic team that won the 4 x 400m relay at Barcelona, thereby becoming the first ever father and son duo in the history of the Olympics to win a gold in the same event.
